Ian Crowder, a spokesperson for the organisation, explained that the reason for such high premiums is that covering young motorists is not profitable for providers.

In his opinion, the major factor in this situation is that the number of personal injury lawyers - and claims - has gone up so much over the past few years that the level of payouts is making the industry "unsustainable".

"Car insurance premiums have risen across the board by 40 per cent over the past year and young drivers are taking the increases particularly in the neck," he added.

Mr Crowder's comments follow the publication of research by the AA, which showed young males are currently having to pay very high premiums, with the average of three cheapest quotes for such drivers standing at £2,457.
